Meet the Artist
Artist Marc Anthony Massaro recently completed a commission for the Wooster Square Monument, a moving tribute to Italian immigrants in New Haven’s historic Wooster Square neighborhood. Unveiled on June 9, 2024, the memorial is a legacy of immigration, as well as a place of reflection for those who share the area’s immigrant story.
A message from Marc Anthony Massaro regarding his public monument, Indicando La Via al Futuro:
On Sunday June 9th the sculpture I created for Wooster square was unveiled. It was the closing chapter of the Wooster square monument project.
It took me all of fourteen months to complete the life size sculpture…but it took the Wooster square monument committee four long, difficult years to be granted the approval to place the sculpture in the square.
As I did not have the opportunity on Sunday to address all that were in attendance, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the support of my family, friends, my colleagues in the arts, my many students who saw the sculpture materialize every week that they came to class and most certainly everyone in the community who supported this project and understood what the sculpture truly represents.
I would like to publicly acknowledge the following people: artists Jon Kolton, Meghan Lee, Alethea Capobianco, and engineer Joe Chadwick who assisted me in the production of the sculpture.Without their assistance I would never had been able to complete the sculpture.
And last but not least, my wife Lauren, whose behind the scenes work and perpetual moral support goes beyond any words of thanks that I could ever find.
From the moment l created the sketch that would eventually evolve into the sculpture, it was paramount to me that the sculpture be for everyone and not just for those of Italian heritage. A respectful and appreciative reminder of the struggles and triumphs of ALL immigrants, no matter what country they came from — or the circumstances of how they got here. Acknowledging the indigenous people who were on this continent long before any of us showed up, aside from them, we are all from somewhere else.
Today, in the here and now, it is important more than ever before that we embrace and defend the diversity of all of our citizens. It is what I was taught that this country is all about. That we welcome anyone who has the desire to become an American citizen. And most importantly, that we are accepting of one another because of the common denominator we all share. We are all Americans, united.
My thanks to all who attended the dedication on Sunday. It was deeply appreciated
